When can I leave my letting agent?
Enter the notice period from your agency agreement and the date you'd give notice. You'll get the earliest switch date and a dated plan for the handover, so nothing is left to the last week.
Agreements count notice in different ways: some need it to be received rather than sent, and some end the day before. Check the wording in yours. This is a planning aid, not legal advice.
Where to find your notice period
It's in the agency agreement you signed with the agent, usually under "termination" or "ending this agreement". One to three months is common, and it normally has to be given in writing. Look for three things while you're there: whether notice has to end on a particular day, any fee for leaving, and any clause that keeps a fee running for as long as a tenant the agent found stays in the flat.
The tenancy carries on
Changing agent doesn't end or change your tenancy. The tenant stays, and doesn't need to sign anything new. What moves is the paperwork, the rent account and who the tenant calls. The plan above covers each one. For the full background, read how to switch letting agent when you live abroad.
